We have finally reached the point where someone is going to court over a stick figure. A legal fight is brewing over whether a simple character generated by AI counts as actual intellectual property that a human can own.
The whole thing feels like a fever dream. If the courts rule that AI-generated characters don't qualify for protection, it effectively turns the entire AI art industry into a public-domain free-for-all. Basically, if you can't own your prompt-born mascot, you can't really stop anyone from ripping off your brand.
Copyright law is currently trying to wrestle with the fact that machines don't have souls or creative intent, but their output is becoming too profitable to ignore.
