Trump Is Trying to Undo Birthright Citizenship Again (The ACLU Says No)

Original version ·

Just when you thought the debate over the 14th Amendment was settled, Trump dropped two new executive orders to bypass the Supreme Court.

So, Trump is back at it, trying to rewrite the rules on who gets to be an American citizen. Even though the Supreme Court already shut down his previous attempts, he just signed two new executive orders to try and slice away at birthright citizenship.

The first order targets anyone he labels an “alien enemy” or a lobbyist for a foreign government. The second is an attempt to crack down on “birth tourism,” which, spoiler alert, is already illegal. The ACLU isn't even bothering to start a brand new court case. They’re basically just tapping the judge on the shoulder and saying, “Hey, remember how you already ruled that this is unconstitutional? Can you please tell the President to knock it off?”

It’s the legal equivalent of being told “no” by your parents, running to the other room, and asking them the exact same question again in a different hat. The ACLU lead counsel, Cody Wofsy, is clearly exhausted by the ping-pong match, noting that while the President might not like the Constitution, that doesn't exactly make it optional.

Apparently, the law is just a suggestion if you write enough executive orders.
